Hotel Description
Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of Bordeaux hotels, and honestly, most of them either try too hard to be boutique-y or feel like generic business chains. But Volubilis? This place actually gets it right. It’s tucked away on rue Camille Godard in Chartrons – you know, that neighborhood that used to be all wine warehouses and is now where locals go to avoid the tourist crowds downtown. The building itself has this understated elegance thing going on, like someone’s well-traveled aunt decided to open a guesthouse and had impeccable taste about it.
What really struck me was how they handle the details without making a big show of it. The rooms have this perfect balance – luxury touches that actually matter (seriously good linens, rainfall showers that don’t run out of hot water) but nothing feels forced or Instagram-staged. I mean, you’ll still want to take photos, but it’s because everything looks genuinely beautiful, not because they’re trying to create viral moments. The breakfast situation is particularly solid – they do this local sourcing thing with products from the nearby market, and you can tell they know their suppliers personally. Also, pro tip: if you’re driving, ask about parking when you book because street parking in Chartrons can be… well, let’s just say it’s character-building.
Here’s what I really appreciate though – the location is brilliant in ways that aren’t immediately obvious. Sure, you’re a quick tram ride from the historic center, but you’re also walking distance to some of the best wine bars locals actually frequent, not just the touristy ones near Place de la Bourse. There’s this whole stretch along the quays that’s perfect for morning runs or evening walks, and honestly, it feels more like staying in a neighborhood than staying in a hotel district. The staff seems to get this too – they’ll point you toward the good stuff without that rehearsed concierge spiel. One guy told me about this tiny bistro around the corner that doesn’t even have a sign, and it ended up being one of my best meals in the city. That 8.7 rating makes sense when you factor in all these little touches that add up to something genuinely memorable rather than just professionally acceptable.

We particularly liked the room, the breakfast that was served in the kitchen that felt like home. Also we could drink fresh ground coffee. The rooms are very carefully designed. We stayed at the room with the patio which was amazing. The owner was very polite. The location was 10 minute walk from the centre (during the walk you can discover pretty things) from Chantron's area , a really beautiful neighborhood and from the Jardin public.

Beautiful decor. The common kitchen and lounge are clean, good size and nicely decorated. The breakfast is good. The staff (although they are not always around) was helpful. I like that the room has a separate toilet from the bathroom. The room is not big but has ample closet and storage space. The price is very reasonable.

We stayed here on our return from Saint Emillion, we loved it so much, it’s like a home away from home. In a lovely part of Bordeaux, we were able to get a great night sleep and recharge.

The Volubilis Guest House is terrific, friendly host, brilliant breakfast and comfortable beds in beautiful rooms, it was so good we booked it again on our return from St Emillion. The location is in a very nice part of Bordeaux with nice restaurants and cafes within walking distance.

Fabulous guest house, room facilities and host, the communal/courtyard is a delightful space, the sensitive interior design, space and style lovely. The beds were super comfy (memory foam topper) and spotless as was the room and facilities (Nespresso pod machine a bonus). Cafes, restaurants and bars a few minutes walk as is the main Chartron shopping district – lots of independent stores. A 15 minute walk along the river takes you to the heart of downtown. Sunday markets on the quay in Chartron district. Our host Ludovic was very helpful and present to ask any advice or guidance. Highly recommend and will definitely like to stay again when visiting Bordeaux again. Thank you Ludovic. PS: Tanjia Room and patio 💜
