Hotel Description
Honestly, when I first walked up to 10 rue de l’Observance, I wasn’t expecting much – it’s this quiet residential street that most tourists completely miss. But that’s actually what makes this duplex apartment so brilliant. You’re literally a five-minute stroll from Place Camille Jullian (where all the good wine bars are), but at night it’s peaceful enough that you can sleep with the windows open without getting woken up by drunk British tourists at 3am.
The apartment itself surprised me – I mean, it’s technically a 3-star place, but whoever designed it actually thought about how people live. The downstairs has this open kitchen that flows into the living area, and they’ve got proper counter space, not those tiny European afterthoughts where you can barely fit a coffee cup. Upstairs, both bedrooms are decent sized, though the one facing the street gets more light (just so you know). The bathroom’s nothing fancy, but there’s actually hot water pressure, which… well, if you’ve stayed in Bordeaux apartments before, you’ll appreciate that. One thing though – the stairs between floors are a bit steep, so maybe not ideal if you’re hauling massive suitcases or have mobility issues.
What I really love about this spot is how it puts you in an actual Bordeaux neighborhood. You know that little boulangerie on the corner of rue Fondaudège? Their pain au chocolat is honestly better than anything you’ll find near the cathedral, and the woman behind the counter will remember your order after two days. There’s also this tiny wine shop – Cave de l’Observance – literally around the corner where the owner will chat your ear off about natural wines if you let him. The whole area feels lived-in, not like a tourist bubble. You’ll see kids walking to school, locals doing their grocery shopping at the Monoprix on rue Sainte-Catherine – it’s real life, which is refreshing after spending time in the overly polished historic center. Parking can be tricky (it’s mostly street parking with meters), but honestly, you won’t need a car much from here. The tram’s about a seven-minute walk, and everything worth seeing in Bordeaux is either walkable or a quick tram ride away. I stayed here in late September when the weather was still warm, and it was perfect – close enough to everything but far enough from the crowds that descend on the more obvious hotel areas.
