Hotel Description
So you know how everyone talks about staying in Bordeaux’s “golden triangle” but half the time you end up somewhere that’s either overpriced or feels like a glorified hostel? Well, this place – and honestly, ignore that ridiculously long French name, just call it the Vieille Tour apartments – actually gets it right. I stumbled across it last spring when everything else was booked during the wine festival, and I’m genuinely glad I did.
The location is what hooked me first. You’re literally on Rue de la Vieille Tour, which sounds fancy but it’s actually this quiet little street that locals use as a shortcut between the main shopping area and the river. I mean, you can walk to Place de la Bourse in maybe four minutes, but you’re not dealing with the constant tourist foot traffic and street performers at all hours. The building itself has that classic Bordeaux cream stone facade – you know the one, same as half the city center – but inside it’s been completely updated. The air conditioning actually works (and trust me, you’ll need it in July), which is honestly rare for these older buildings. I stayed in one of the T2 units and the space felt way bigger than expected. The kitchen’s small but functional – I managed to make coffee and heat up pastries from Du Pain et des Idées down the street without any issues.
What really surprised me was how quiet it gets at night. During the day you’ve got people walking by, maybe some delivery trucks in the morning, but by 9 PM it’s remarkably peaceful for being so central. The windows are double-glazed, which helps, and the courtyard-facing rooms are even quieter if that’s your thing. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward hotel lobby hovering while they find your reservation. The host met me right at the entrance and showed me around, pointed out the good coffee place around the corner (Café Plume, if you’re wondering), and mentioned that the little Monoprix on Cours de l’Intendance stays open until 10 PM for essentials. Parking’s going to be your biggest headache, honestly – there’s no dedicated spot, so you’re looking at the underground garage on Place Gambetta or hunting for street parking. But if you’re planning to walk everywhere anyway, which you absolutely should in this area, then it’s not really an issue.
I think what I appreciated most was that it feels like staying in someone’s actual apartment rather than a sterile hotel room. There are books on the shelves, decent wine glasses in the kitchen, and the shower pressure is surprisingly excellent. The 9-star rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but for what it is, everything just works well. If you’re the type who wants room service and a concierge, look elsewhere. But if you want a comfortable base for exploring Bordeaux without paying tourist-trap prices, and you actually want to feel like you’re living in the city for a few days rather than just visiting it, this place delivers.
