Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the Hotel de la Presse on Rue Porte Dijeaux, I almost missed it entirely. It’s tucked into this narrow pedestrian street that most tourists rush past on their way to Place Gambetta, but that’s actually what makes it kind of perfect. You’re literally steps from all the main shopping (the Rue Sainte-Catherine is right there), but you don’t get the chaos that comes with staying directly on the big boulevards.
The building itself has that classic Bordeaux limestone thing going on – you know, those pale golden stones that look amazing when the late afternoon sun hits them just right. Inside, well, it’s definitely embracing the whole “urban style” concept they’ve got in the name. Think clean lines, lots of grays and whites, maybe a splash of that deep wine red you see everywhere in this city. The rooms are… compact, I guess you’d say. I mean, it’s a 3-star place in a historic city center, so you’re not getting a sprawling suite or anything, but honestly the location more than makes up for it. My room faced the pedestrian street, which meant I could people-watch from the window but didn’t have to deal with car traffic all night – though you will hear some chatter from the bars until maybe 11 PM or so.
What really sold me on this place was how the staff actually knew the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to the wine museum, the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward the tram – he told me about this little shortcut through Place du Parlement that cuts about ten minutes off the walk. And breakfast (which, okay, is pretty standard continental fare) happens in this small room where you end up chatting with other guests because, well, there’s nowhere else to look. I ended up getting restaurant recommendations from a couple from Lyon that were way better than anything I found online. The whole vibe is just… unpretentious, I guess? Like, they’re not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Bordeaux, they’re just trying to be a solid place to crash while you explore the city. The shower pressure was actually decent, the Wi-Fi worked fine, and – this might sound silly but it mattered to me – the key cards worked every single time, which is more than I can say for some supposedly fancier places I’ve stayed. If you’re the type who wants to spend most of your time wandering around the Triangle d’Or or hitting up wine bars in Saint-Pierre, and you just need somewhere clean and well-located to sleep it off, this place totally does the job.
