Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Une Terrasse aux Chartrons? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in the Chartrons district – Rue Sicard – where you’d walk right past it if you weren’t looking. I mean, that’s actually perfect because the Chartrons has this whole authentic Bordeaux vibe without the tourist crowds you get around Place de la Bourse. The building itself has that classic French elegance thing going on, but honestly, it doesn’t feel stuffy or intimidating like some of these boutique places can. When I checked in, the staff had this genuinely warm way about them – not the rehearsed hotel script you usually get, but like they actually cared about making sure I knew the neighborhood.

What really makes this place special is how it sits in the heart of what locals call the antique district. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Cours Portal, where there’s this amazing Saturday morning market that most tourists never find. The hotel itself – well, the rooms have this sophisticated Parisian apartment feel, with high ceilings and these gorgeous French windows that actually open (shocking, I know). The beds are seriously comfortable, and I’m picky about that stuff. The bathrooms are modern without being cold, which is harder to pull off than you’d think. There’s something about the whole setup that feels lived-in rather than designed by committee. Actually, I loved that you could hear the gentle hum of the neighborhood in the morning – people heading to the bakery, the occasional tram in the distance – it made me feel like I was staying in an actual part of Bordeaux, not some isolated hotel bubble.

Here’s the thing about the location that nobody tells you: you’re perfectly positioned between the historic center and the newer Bacalan district where all the wine bars are. Walking to the city center takes maybe fifteen minutes along the river, which is gorgeous, or you can hop on the tram right at the Chartrons station. Parking was surprisingly easy on the surrounding streets – I was dreading that whole Bordeaux parking nightmare everyone warns you about. The area gets pretty quiet at night, so if you’re someone who needs dead silence to sleep, you’ll be happy. During the day though, there’s this nice energy with all the antique shops and little cafés. I spent way too much time at this wine bar called Le Flacon just around the corner – the owner knows everything about Bordeaux wines and doesn’t make you feel stupid for asking basic questions. Honestly, staying here made me feel like I discovered a side of Bordeaux that most visitors miss, and isn’t that what you want from a really good hotel?
