Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first saw the address on Rue de Ruat – it’s this narrow little street that you’d probably walk right past if you weren’t looking for it. But man, stepping into this duplex completely changed my perspective on what a 3-star place could be. The moment you walk in, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually thought about how real people live and travel, not just how to cram beds into rooms.

The layout is what really gets you – it’s a proper duplex, so you’ve got this feeling of staying in an actual Bordeaux apartment rather than just another hotel room. Downstairs flows nicely for hanging out, and honestly, the air conditioning was a lifesaver when I visited in July (you know how those old French buildings can get stuffy). But here’s the thing that made me fall for this place: that rooftop access. I mean, you’re literally looking out over the terracotta tiles of Bordeaux’s old town, and on clear evenings you can catch glimpses of the Garonne. I spent way too many mornings up there with coffee, watching the city wake up below. The location is pretty brilliant too – you’re maybe a three-minute walk from Place du Parlement, which locals know is where you want to be for that perfect mix of restaurants and nightlife without the tourist chaos of the main squares. I could actually hear the gentle buzz from the wine bars in the evenings, but it never felt intrusive – more like a pleasant urban lullaby.

What really impressed me was how the owners seemed to understand what travelers actually need. There’s proper counter space in the kitchen area (revolutionary, I know), decent water pressure, and – this might sound weird – but the WiFi actually works well throughout both floors, which isn’t always a given in these old buildings. The whole place feels lived-in but well-maintained, if that makes sense. You can tell it’s not some corporate chain setup where everything’s identical and soulless. I did notice that the stairs between floors are a bit steep, so maybe not ideal if you’re traveling with heavy luggage or mobility concerns, but that’s pretty typical for historic Bordeaux architecture. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward key-handoff drama you sometimes get with apartment rentals. The 9.3 rating isn’t surprising at all when you experience how thoughtfully everything’s been put together, from the practical stuff like having enough outlets near the bed to those little touches like actually decent hangers in the closet.
