You know what struck me first about Splendide Chai? The name actually makes sense when you see the place – it’s this gorgeous converted warehouse space in Chartrons that honestly feels more like staying in a friend’s incredibly stylish loft than a typical hotel. I mean, 700 square meters is no joke, and they’ve used every bit of it thoughtfully. The industrial bones are still there – exposed beams, those beautiful high ceilings you get in old Bordeaux buildings – but someone with serious design sense has made it feel warm and lived-in rather than cold and echoey.

The location on Rue Ramonet is pretty perfect if you ask me. Chartrons has this wonderful mix of being authentically local (you’ll see actual Bordelais doing their morning coffee runs) while still having enough wine bars and antique shops to keep you entertained for days. I walked to the Saturday morning market at Marché des Chartrons in about three minutes, and the tram stop at Cours du Médoc is close enough that getting to the city center or out to the wine country is actually easier than from most downtown hotels – less tourist chaos, better connections. Plus, parking around here doesn’t make you want to cry, which anyone who’s driven in Bordeaux will appreciate.

What really gets me about this place though is how they’ve nailed that sweet spot between having space to breathe and feeling cozy. The rooms – well, they’re more like apartments really – have these massive windows that flood everything with light, and the beds are positioned so you wake up feeling like you’re floating rather than crammed into a box. The bathrooms deserve a mention too; whoever designed them understands that travelers want both a proper shower and somewhere to spread out their stuff without everything ending up on the floor. I stayed during a busy wine harvest season in September, and while the whole neighborhood had this wonderful buzz of activity, the thick walls kept things surprisingly quiet at night. The 8.7 rating honestly feels about right – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Bordeaux, but it absolutely nails what it is trying to be. If you’re the type who’d rather have character and space over marble lobbies and room service, this is your spot.

  The location and size of the apartment.
  
  What could be improved: The first impression was very good, but the apartment was so badly maintained. We note that in May 2024, a review mentioned the broken dishwasher door, but there were other issues such as the freezer iced up. On arrival, we understood that the concierge would greet us. We arrived early but the cleaner opened the door, gave us the key and she left. We could only assume we were to enter. The concierge was very aggressive about this. We tried numerous times to get him to come to the apartment to show him the many issues, but he never came except on the last day. He did, however, arrange for the more obvious issues to be fixed, such as the flooding through a light because one of the showers was blocked, but there were far too many problems to describe to him, including for example a nail coming through the floor in the bedroom. It was unfortunate that because he was offended that we entered early, not our fault agent appeared determined not to come and sort out problems and show us how things worked. We were 4 elderly couples. Poor show, but well done Booking.com for the partial refund!

  Le logement est très grand, très bien decoré et très bien placé au cœur des Chartrons, à proximité de tous les commerces.
  
  What could be improved: Le mobilier exterieur et interieur tables et chaises est un peu juste pour 15 personnes. Nous avons eu du mal à manger tous ensemble.

  Eine wirklich außergewöhnliche Wohnung. Die Architektur ist beeindruckend. Die Zimmer sind als „Kasten“Konstruktion im ersten Stock. Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt, mitten in Bordeaux in wirklich super Lage zu wohnen. Die Betreuung durch Nicolas und Sarah haben toll funktioniert. Die Bitte nach einer neuen Pfanne ( die alte war echt übel) wurde sehr schnell erfüllt. Sie haben immer sehr schnell reagiert.
  
  What could be improved: Belüftung, es gibt zwar Fenster in den Zimmern, diese sind aber nur kippbar. (Keine richtige Lüftung möglich). Da es auch keine Klimaanlage gibt, kann es schon sehr heiß uns stickig werden(trotz Ventilatoren).
  Die Wasserversorung mit warmen Wasser ist trickreich und nicht ergiebig. Einige mussten immer kalt duschen.
  Außerdem ist das Appartement durchaus schon in die Jahre gekommen. Eine gründliche Reinigung und Behebung einiger Mängel wären schön ( z.B. der Beamer im Kino funktioniert nicht – dafür wurde einfach ein grosser Fernseher angeschlossen, einige Töpfe könnten ausgetauscht werden, ( vor allem sollten alle „alten“ Sachen entfernt werden), die Spülmaschinentür hat keinen Anschlag und fällt einem auf den Fuß beim Öffnen.
