Honestly, when I first walked up to 14 Rue Garat, I wasn’t expecting much – it’s this quiet residential street that you’d probably walk right past if you didn’t know better. But that’s actually what makes this studio so perfect. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Place Gambetta (where all the good morning markets happen), but you won’t hear drunk tourists stumbling around at 2 AM like you would closer to the main squares.

The studio itself is… well, spacious is right there in the name, and they’re not lying. I mean, for a Bordeaux city center place, you’ve got room to actually spread out your stuff without living out of a suitcase the whole time. The kitchen area is surprisingly well-equipped – I actually cooked a few meals there using ingredients from the little Monoprix around the corner on Cours de l’Intendance. The bed’s comfortable enough that I overslept twice (which never happens to me), and there’s this great morning light that comes through the windows. You know what I really appreciated? The shower has proper water pressure. Sounds silly, but after staying in some old Bordeaux buildings where the shower feels like a gentle mist, it matters.

What really sold me on the location was discovering that morning routine. You can grab fresh bread from the boulangerie on Rue Judaïque – it’s maybe a three-minute walk – then take your coffee to Jardin Public, which becomes this lovely quiet spot before the day gets going. The tram stop at Gambetta is close enough that you’re not dragging luggage forever, but far enough that you don’t hear it rumbling by all night. And here’s something the guidebooks don’t tell you: you’re perfectly positioned between the fancy wine bars near the cathedral and the more relaxed spots in Saint-Pierre, so you can pick your vibe depending on the night. Parking can be a bit tricky if you’re driving – the street parking fills up fast, but there’s a public garage about six blocks away that’s not too expensive. The whole area gets pretty quiet after 10 PM, which some people love and others might find a bit too sleepy, but I thought it was perfect for actually getting some rest between all the wine tasting and wandering around the old town.
