Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw the name “Mieuxqualhotel jacuzzi privatif Velvet Desire,” I thought someone was having a laugh with Google Translate. But you know what? Sometimes the places with questionable names turn out to be gems, and this little spot on Rue du Grand Maurian is exactly that kind of surprise.
The thing about Saint Augustin is that it’s not where most tourists land – it’s actually this quiet residential pocket just south of central Bordeaux where real people live. I mean, you’re still only about fifteen minutes by tram from Place de la Bourse (take the A line, super easy), but the streets here have that lived-in feel where you’ll see locals walking their dogs and picking up groceries instead of crowds taking selfies. The hotel sits on the ground floor of what looks like a typical Bordeaux townhouse, and honestly, you might walk past it if you’re not paying attention. There’s no grand entrance or doorman – just a discreet sign and, well, that’s sort of the point.
Inside though… okay, this is where things get interesting. The private jacuzzi isn’t just some marketing gimmick they threw in – it’s actually the centerpiece of each room, and they’ve clearly put thought into making it feel intimate rather than tacky. The whole “Velvet Desire” theme could have gone very wrong, but they’ve kept it classy with deep burgundies and soft lighting that feels more boutique hotel than, um, other things that name might suggest. What really surprised me was how quiet everything is – thick walls, good soundproofing, which matters when you’re trying to relax. The rooms themselves are compact but cleverly designed, with those high ceilings you get in older French buildings and windows that actually open (thank god, because AC in France is still hit or miss).
Parking can be a bit of a pain around here – the streets are narrow and spots fill up fast, especially in the evenings when residents come home from work. But there’s usually something within a block or two if you’re patient. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, no complicated key cards or confusing instructions, just someone who actually seemed to care that you had what you needed. The 8.9 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it absolutely nails what it’s going for. Perfect for couples who want something different from the standard hotel experience, especially if you’re the type who’d rather discover a neighborhood than tick off tourist boxes. Just don’t expect room service or a concierge – this place is more about giving you a beautiful space and letting you make your own Bordeaux adventure.
