Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about the Mercure Bordeaux Chateau Chartrons? It’s actually in one of those gorgeous 18th-century buildings that make you slow down and appreciate where you are. I mean, you’re right on Cours Saint-Louis in the Chartrons district – which honestly feels like the cool older sibling of central Bordeaux. This isn’t some cookie-cutter business hotel; the facade has this beautiful cream stone that catches the morning light perfectly, and you can tell they’ve kept the original architectural bones while making everything inside work for modern travelers.
The location is pretty brilliant if you ask me. Chartrons used to be the wine merchant quarter (still is, really), so you’re surrounded by these incredible wine shops and antique stores that tourists downtown never find. The famous Saturday morning market at Marché des Chartrons is literally a five-minute walk – I’d set an alarm for that one because the cheese vendors sell out of the good stuff early. What I really appreciated was being able to walk along the Garonne riverfront without fighting crowds, then hop on the tram when I wanted to hit the main sights. The B line stops right nearby and gets you to Place de la Comédie in about ten minutes, but honestly, some evenings I just wandered back along the quays because the walk is so lovely.
Inside, they’ve done this nice balance between keeping the building’s character and making sure everything actually works well. The rooms have decent space – not huge, but thoughtfully laid out – and the beds are properly comfortable (I’m picky about this). The bathrooms are modern without being sterile, which can be tricky in these historic buildings. Breakfast was better than I expected; they do proper local pastries and the coffee doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around for hours. The staff seemed to genuinely know the neighborhood too – the front desk guy pointed me toward this fantastic little wine bar on Rue Notre Dame that I never would’ve found otherwise. I will say the WiFi was a bit spotty in my room on the third floor, nothing terrible but worth mentioning if you’re planning to work. Parking can be tight on the street, but there’s a public garage about two blocks away that won’t break the bank. Honestly, for a 4-star place with this much character in such a great neighborhood, the 8/10 rating feels about right – it delivers what you want without any unpleasant surprises.
Bordeaux’s hotels range from charming boutique properties in the historic city center to elegant châteaux converted into luxury accommodations in the surrounding wine country.

The bed was fantastic, the little garden onsite for the dog to go to the toilet and the size/ quietness of the room was great.

Nice hotel in the centre of Bordeaux. Walking distance to Le Cité du vin and a very nice promenade along the Garonne river. Along the river there are plenty of shops and restaurants. On a sunny day perfect for a walk. Good breakfast and also a restaurant with a nice selection of wines. Parking is possible in an underground garage, costs 15 EUR/night.

Standard corporate hotel. Staff were OK, but weren't falling over themselves to help with our bags or negotiating a price for bike parking. Right in the town with a massive underground car park. Car park is perfect for keeping motorbikes secure.

Easy to get to by car.
Adjoining rooms good.

Generic hotel. Pretty okay location, not particularly close to many things but the Chartrons area is always nice.

Anne from France (7/10)
The hotel location is excellent for visits to the Cite du Vin and the Bassin des Lumieres as well as the many shops and restaurants along the river front. Plenty of underground secure parking at a reasonable price. The staff were all charming and very helpful.
