Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about the Martinique apartment? It’s actually not trying to be a traditional hotel at all – and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work so well. Tucked into this gorgeous stretch of Cours de la Martinique in the Chartrons district, it feels more like you’re staying at a sophisticated friend’s place who happens to have impeccable taste. The building itself has that classic Bordeaux limestone facade that catches the afternoon light just right, and when you’re walking back from dinner, you’ll actually feel a little proud pointing up and saying “that’s where I’m staying.”

The Chartrons neighborhood is… well, it’s sort of having this renaissance moment, but it hasn’t gotten completely overrun yet. You’re a solid 15-minute walk from the touristy stuff around Place de la Bourse (which is perfect because you can easily get there but come home to actual quiet), and I mean quiet – even with the windows open, the street noise is minimal. What I really love is how you can walk to Quai des Chartrons along the Garonne in about five minutes for morning runs or evening wine-watching-the-river-flow situations. There’s this little bakery called Du Pain et des Idées just down the street that locals queue up at around 8 AM – not mentioned in guidebooks yet, but their pain au chocolat is legitimately the best I had in Bordeaux.

The apartment setup is honestly refreshing after staying in cookie-cutter hotel rooms. You get proper space to spread out, a kitchen that’s actually functional (not just decorative like some places), and – this might sound small but it matters – really good water pressure in the shower. The design walks this nice line between modern comfort and respecting the building’s character; exposed beams and original hardwood floors, but also excellent WiFi and a coffee machine that doesn’t require an engineering degree. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that hovering-at-a-desk-while-they-upsell-you business. The 8.2 rating feels about right; it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but everything works exactly as it should, and there’s something to be said for that kind of reliability. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I was planning to explore more of the Left Bank wine scene – you’re perfectly positioned for day trips to Saint-Émilion, and coming back to your own little Bordeaux base feels pretty ideal.
