Hotel Description

Look, when I first walked up to Maison Fredon on Rue Porte de la Monnaie, I’ll be honest – the name had me a bit confused because it sounds way fancier than what you’ll actually find. But you know what? That turned out to be a good thing. This is a solid 4-star spot right in Bordeaux’s sweet spot, and I mean literally – you’re basically a two-minute stroll from Place du Parlement, which locals will tell you is where the real action happens after dark.

The thing about this hotel is it gets the basics really right without trying too hard to impress you. My room had this sort of understated French elegance going on, nothing too flashy but everything felt quality – like the kind of place where the shower actually has good water pressure and the bed doesn’t leave you with a sore back. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stayed at night, even though you’re smack in the center of everything. I mean, Bordeaux isn’t exactly Paris noise-wise, but still, when you’re this close to all the wine bars and bistros that locals pack into on weekends, silence is golden. The staff actually knows the neighborhood too – not just the tourist stuff but like, where to grab the best coffee at 7 AM (there’s this tiny place on Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges that opens early) or which wine shops won’t completely rip you off.

Here’s what sold me on the place though: it’s positioned perfectly for someone who wants to experience Bordeaux like you actually live there, not just hit the obvious spots. You can walk to the Garonne riverfront in about eight minutes, but more importantly, you’re surrounded by these narrow medieval streets that most tourists miss because they’re bee-lining it to the Grand Théâtre. The hotel itself sits in this historic quarter where every other building has some story dating back centuries – honestly, just wandering around before breakfast became my daily routine. Parking can be a bit of a headache if you’re driving (welcome to old European city centers), but there’s a public garage nearby and really, you won’t need a car once you’re settled in. The 7.9 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but it delivers exactly what you’d want from a well-run hotel in this location. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the lobby always smelled like this subtle mix of coffee and old wood that just felt… French, I guess? Sometimes it’s the little things that make a place stick with you.

Reviews

  • Maison Fredon is exactly opposite La Tupina restaurant where we dined twice. – Sally from United Kingdom – 11 July 2025 (9/10)

    Comfortable Room Only accommodation

What could be improved: 4pm check-in time

  • Great spot to stay – Debbie from New Zealand – 20 June 2025 (9/10)

New manager Paul was great and was at the property just after we arrived. Pink room ground floor was spacious . Shower good and having heated towel rail helpful.

What could be improved: Had booked La Putina for dinner but did not realise apt so close and road busy. Bring ear plug’s

  • Absolutely loved staying in this gorgeous and historic building with a wonderful restaurant just steps away – Linda from Australia – 5 June 2025 (8/10)

The location was great and the room up the top was very quirky and comfortable.

What could be improved: The only issue was the shower/bath. The plug kept coming apart so it was hard to have a bath and the shower part meant that the floor got flooded every time we had a shower

  • Great property poor communication – Alan from United Kingdom – 23 May 2025 (7/10)

Location and style. Only spoilt by lack of response to requests for information. Otherwise we would have rated the property higher!

What could be improved: Poor communication, information link didn’t work and we had no information on the property. When trying to find out more we had no response to my emails regarding baggage storage. The contact numbers didn’t work and when given an alternate number by another resident we had no response.

  • Great location, view of the river and close to the centre of Bordeaux. Comfortable room. – Katie from United Kingdom – 19 May 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: We would have liked some milk in the fridge to have with our tea/coffee. Decaf coffee pods for the machine.

  • Very good – Diana from Canada – 1 May 2025 (8/10)

Great restaurant for lunch and dinner directly across the street. We ate there twice. 15 minute walk from the train station. The room was huge! The fridge was stocked with wine, champagne, pop and juice for purchase. Very quiet at night. Very friendly woman at the restaurant let us in on arrival.

What could be improved: No breakfast available nearby was a hassle. The QR code for the wifi was discontinued. The woman at the restaurant entered the password for me, but as my husband wasn’t present he didn’t get wifi at all for the duration of our stay. Such a large room could easily have accommodated an actual table (there was a small desk).

  • Great room & location – Kent from United Kingdom – 7 April 2025 (7/10)

Lovely decorated and presented room. (pink suite) the location was great and with a nice stroll along the river front.

What could be improved: The communication between the property and me was very troublesome. There were no check in instructions before arrival and I left a message which went I replied to. (Still no response at the time of writing this review three days later) Check in went okay in the end. You have to go across the road to the restaurant’La Tupina When we booked the rate said it included breakfast but on arrival there was a notice saying that breakfast was €15 pp. with a QR code to scan to order. But on scanning it just took you to a QR code generating website and no link to anything else. So we didn’t get breakfast as there was no one to ask.
So, it’s a great place. Lovely room but just needs a bit more attention to detail to make it excellent.

  • Fabulous rooms in perfect spot in Bordeaux – William from United Kingdom – 29 December 2024 (9/10)

Everything except check in. Rooms are just magnificent and location perfect. Near enough to both rail station and centre of town and in a very trendy part of town.

What could be improved: Once you know how to get the key check in is easy. However we didn’t find it easy to get the information.

  • It was too brief. – Mark from Spain – 18 December 2024 (8/10)

A large room with a great sense of local character.

  • lovely room/suite in a central part of town. – Shane from Australia – 7 October 2024 (8/10)

the red room was spacious, lovely and light with a great ensuite although the shower door was a squeeze past folding inwards. The bed was fantastic. Location central and very close to excellent tram network.

What could be improved: not sure if towel replacement was supposed to be hotel style but it was very haphazard. also coffee pods weren't replaced or cups washed. Our friends used the Green room and the carpet was wet from an open skylight, which left a damp carpet smell. not alot of action taken from the owners to remedy this. No elevator . I understand a common issue in Europe but people who can't carry cases need to be aware.
