Hotel Description

You know what really caught me off guard about Maison du Lierre? The name literally means “house of ivy,” and when you actually see this place tucked into rue Huguerie, it makes perfect sense. There’s something quietly elegant about the building that feels distinctly Bordeaux – not flashy, just… right. I mean, you’re basically in the heart of everything here, maybe a three-minute walk from Place Gambetta, but the street itself has this calm residential vibe that lets you actually sleep at night (trust me on this one, I’ve stayed in “central” hotels where the party never ends).

The location is honestly brilliant if you know the city at all. Rue Huguerie runs parallel to some of the busier tourist drags, so you get all the benefits without the constant foot traffic outside your window. You can walk to the Grand Théâtre in about eight minutes, hit the quais along the Garonne for that perfect sunset stroll, or – and this is key – you’re close enough to the good wine bars in the Saint-Pierre district that you don’t need to worry about catching the last tram. The building itself feels like someone’s converted townhouse (which it probably was), and there’s this nice balance between maintaining the old Bordeaux character and actually having things work properly. The 8.3 rating makes sense to me because, well, it’s not trying to be a luxury palace, but everything they do, they do well.

What I really appreciated were the small touches that show someone actually thinks about what travelers need. The rooms aren’t huge – this is old Bordeaux, after all, where space is premium – but they’ve used it smartly. Good lighting for actually reading, decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every ten minutes, and honestly, the beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with the mattress all night. The staff genuinely seemed to know the neighborhood, too. When I asked about dinner recommendations, I didn’t get the usual tourist trap suggestions – they pointed me toward this little bistro on rue des Bahutiers that I never would have found otherwise. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this part of town (like most of central Bordeaux), but they’ll give you the real scoop on the nearest options rather than just shrugging and saying “good luck.” For a three-star place, that kind of local knowledge and genuine helpfulness goes a long way.

Loved this hotel – amazing location and really charming building. The breakfast was a lovely addition and having access to the back terrace was great. The staff were also very friendly and allowed us to leave our luggage there the next day before we moved to our next place.

  • Traci from Canada (8/10)

Great location within easy walking distance to restaurants, river etc. very small rooms but to be expected for an inner city small property. Super cute little inner courtyard where you can enjoy sitting outside and enjoy a bit of nature. Comfortable bed and great water pressure in the shower. We didn’t partake in the breakfast so can’t comment on that.
