Hotel Description

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Bordeaux, and honestly? The Wine Lodge on Rue de Saint Genès is one of those spots that just gets it right. It’s tucked away in the Nansouty neighborhood – not exactly the tourist center, which is actually perfect because you get this authentic residential vibe without the cruise ship crowds wandering past your window at 7 AM.

The building itself has that classic Bordeaux limestone thing going on, you know, those honey-colored stones that look amazing when the late afternoon sun hits them. Inside, they’ve done something really smart – it feels like staying in someone’s genuinely stylish home rather than a hotel trying too hard to be boutique-y. The common areas have this lived-in elegance, with wine books scattered around (obviously) and these incredible vintage maps of the wine regions covering the walls. What really sold me though was the breakfast setup – they source everything locally, and I mean everything. The jam comes from this tiny producer in Entre-Deux-Mers, and the owner actually knows the guy’s name and will tell you way more about apricot cultivation than you expected to learn on vacation.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Bordeaux like someone who actually lives there. You’re a five-minute walk from Place Nansouty, which has this excellent morning market on Saturdays – locals buying their weekend groceries, not a tourist trap in sight. The tram stop is literally around the corner, so you can get to the city center in maybe ten minutes, but when you come back in the evening, you’re in this quiet residential area where the biggest noise is someone walking their dog. Parking was surprisingly easy too – there’s street parking that doesn’t require a PhD in French parking regulations to figure out. The rooms themselves are what you’d hope for at this level – comfortable beds (thank god, because I’m getting too old for “charming” accommodations with mattresses from 1987), excellent water pressure, and these little touches like locally-made soaps that smell like lavender without being overwhelming. The wine selection in the common area is ridiculous in the best way – the owner clearly knows their stuff and loves talking about regional producers you’ve never heard of but absolutely should try. I ended up buying three bottles to take home based on their recommendations alone.

Hotels in Bordeaux offer guests the perfect blend of French elegance and modern comfort, with many featuring wine cellars and sommelier services to enhance the authentic regional experience.

  • Wonderful! – John from United States – 31 March 2025 (10/10)

If I could have rated this place a 12 instead of a 10, I would do it. The home is lovely, and Beatrice treated us as well as we have ever been treated when traveling. My wife had a food poisoning emergency and Beatrice was able to get a doctor to do a home visit on a Saturday to examine her and confirm food poisoning from a restaurant near the cathederal. Everything turned out well and I give this property the hightest rating possible. Do not miss the opportunity to stay here.

What could be improved: Nothing it was as near perfect as could be.
