Maison de Bastien Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Maison de Bastien, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect — the address just says Château de Pardaillan, which sounds impossibly grand. Well, it actually is. This five-star property sits within the grounds of an authentic château in Lugon et l’Ile du Carney, about 30 minutes northeast of Bordeaux. The moment you step inside, you realize this isn’t just another luxury hotel trying too hard — it’s the real deal, with that effortless French elegance that you can’t fake.
The Setting
The location is honestly spectacular, and I get why recent guests rated it 9.1 out of 10. You’re surrounded by rolling vineyards and that quintessential Bordeaux countryside that looks like it was painted for a postcard. What I loved most was how peaceful it felt — you know that feeling when you’re close enough to civilization but far enough away that you can actually hear yourself think? The parking is right on-site and free, which might sound like a small thing, but when you’re exploring the wine region with cases of bottles in your trunk, you’ll appreciate not worrying about your car.
The Accommodations
My room was in the château itself, and honestly, sleeping in a place with this much history felt pretty surreal. The décor strikes that perfect balance between respecting the building’s heritage and providing modern comfort — think original stone walls with contemporary furnishings that actually work together. The bathrooms are beautifully appointed without being over the top, and the beds are exactly what you’d hope for after a day of wine tasting. I mean, the whole place just feels authentically French in a way that’s hard to describe but impossible to miss.
Dining and Atmosphere
The restaurant here deserves special mention — they’re serious about their food, which you’d expect in this region. What surprised me was how relaxed the whole dining experience felt, despite the obvious quality. You’re eating in what feels like a grand family home rather than a stuffy hotel dining room. The wine list is obviously exceptional (you’re literally surrounded by some of France’s best vineyards), and the staff actually knows their stuff without being pretentious about it. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the grounds is one of those moments that makes you want to extend your stay.
Why Guests Love It
I can see why couples rate this place so highly — there’s something undeniably romantic about the whole setup. The 8.2 overall rating feels about right; it’s not perfect (the WiFi can be spotty in some areas of the château), but the imperfections somehow add to the charm rather than detract from it. You’re paying for an experience here, not just a place to sleep, and that experience delivers. If you’re exploring Bordeaux’s wine country and want something more memorable than a standard luxury hotel, this place will give you stories to tell for years.

The location was great. Remote and peaceful. Overlooking acres of vineyards.
Peter the host was very helpful and the property is located on a working vineyard / chateau.
