Maison d’hôtes Alma Overview

You know what? I almost walked right past Maison d’hôtes Alma on Rue Guépin – and honestly, that would’ve been such a mistake. This little three-star gem sits tucked away in what feels like residential Bordeaux, but you’re actually just a pleasant ten-minute walk from the Garonne riverfront. The street itself is quiet (which I mean in the best way possible), lined with those beautiful cream-colored Bordeaux stone buildings that make you feel like you’re living in a postcard.

The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about this place. It’s not trying to be fancy or minimalist or whatever – it just feels… right. The rooms have character without being cluttered, and I loved how they’ve mixed modern touches with classic French details. My room had these gorgeous high ceilings and windows that actually opened wide (you’d be surprised how rare that is these days). The bed was properly comfortable too – none of that rock-hard European mattress nonsense you sometimes get. What really got me though was the attention to small things: good lighting for reading, enough outlets near the bed, and a bathroom that didn’t require contortionist skills to navigate.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Bordeaux like locals do rather than just hitting tourist spots. You’re close enough to walk to Place de la Victoire when you want some energy and student life, but far enough away that you won’t hear drunk university kids at 2 AM. There’s a fantastic little bakery literally around the corner – I mean, you can smell the croissants from the hotel entrance in the morning. The tram isn’t right outside your door, but it’s maybe a five-minute walk to Victoire station, which connects you to everything. Parking can be a bit tricky in this neighborhood (it’s mostly street parking), but the hosts actually gave me solid advice about where to find spots. Speaking of the hosts – they clearly know their city inside and out. Not in that rehearsed concierge way, but like actual Bordeaux people who can tell you which wine bar doesn’t rip off tourists and where to get the best canelés. The whole experience felt personal without being intrusive, if that makes sense. With a 9.3 rating, I expected it to be good, but sometimes those scores are inflated – this one actually earns it.

  • Rafael from Brazil (10/10)

Since the check in everything was marvelous. We felt at home at this marvelous boutique hotel. The house is great, clean, confortable, near The bus stop and kinda close to the tram stop. The room was clean and confortable. The tub and water pressure were fantastic. They had hair dryer, smart tv and a spacious room, with a wardrobe. The bed and pillow were outstanding, and the heat was perfect. Breakfast was extra delicious. We were able to choose what time we wanted it to be served. It was absolutely fantastic, croissants, pain au chocolat, jams, bread, eggs, delicious cheeses, fresh grounded Coffee… we loved our stay and do recommend staying there.

Spacious, clean and comfortable. Alain was a wonderful host who made sure we had everything we needed; and gave a fantastic review of the city. We greatly appreciated it.

  • Sue from United Kingdom (10/10)

Our three nights here were a delight. Large comfortable room with a great shower. Breakfast was plentiful and good. Alain was a wonderful host; extremely helpful and kind.

The B&B is in a quiet neighbourhood about 10-15 minutes walk from Gare Saint-Jean, which was easy to get to from the airport by tram (just need to change lines once). Took a bit less than an hour.

It’s about 15-20 minutes walk to the Old Town which wasn’t an issue for us. We would stay here again if ever we’re back in Bordeaux.
