Hotel Description
Honestly, I walked past Les Chambres d’Art twice before realizing I’d found my hotel – and that’s actually part of its charm. Tucked away on rue du Portail in Bordeaux’s Saint-Michel neighborhood, this little 3-star feels more like stumbling into someone’s incredibly stylish private residence than checking into a typical hotel. The entrance is understated in that effortlessly French way, but once you’re inside, you get why this place has a 9.7 rating.
What strikes you immediately is how they’ve nailed the whole “art hotel” concept without being pretentious about it. Each room is genuinely different – I mean, they’re not just throwing around buzzwords here. The walls showcase rotating local artwork (some pieces you can actually purchase, which I thought was pretty cool), and the furniture feels curated rather than ordered from some hotel supply catalog. My room had this gorgeous vintage writing desk that I actually used – you know how hotel desks usually feel like an afterthought? Not here. The bathroom was compact but thoughtfully designed, with really good water pressure and those little French toiletries that don’t smell like generic hotel soap.
Location-wise, you’re in Saint-Michel, which means you’re getting the real Bordeaux experience without the tourist circus of the city center. The famous Marché des Capucins is literally a five-minute walk – perfect for grabbing fresh pastries in the morning or browsing the weekend flea market. You can easily walk to the main sights (the cathedral’s about 15 minutes on foot), but you’re also surrounded by the kind of neighborhood bistros and wine bars where locals actually hang out. Fair warning though – this area gets lively on weekend evenings, though the hotel’s windows do a decent job keeping street noise out. Parking can be tricky around here, but there’s a public lot about two blocks away if you’re driving.
The staff deserves a mention too – they’re genuinely helpful without being hovering. The woman at reception gave me handwritten recommendations for wine shops and even called ahead to make sure one would be open on Sunday. Check-in was smooth, and they were flexible about letting me store luggage before my room was ready. It’s those small touches that make the difference, especially when you’re dealing with travel delays or early flights.
I’ll be honest – this isn’t the place if you want a pool, room service, or a concierge in a uniform. Les Chambres d’Art is more about experiencing Bordeaux like you live there temporarily, in a space that happens to be beautiful and comfortable. The price point feels fair for what you get, especially considering the location and the genuine character of the place. If you’re the type of traveler who’d rather discover a neighborhood wine bar than eat at the hotel restaurant, and you appreciate staying somewhere with actual personality, this spot delivers.

A very nice B&B in a beautiful house and with a really friendly host. Delicious breakfast. Location is not close to the city center, but the nearby trams are fast and convenient.
A happy stay with a lovely host – Guy from United Kingdom – 26 May 2025 (10/10)
We had a wonderful stay at Les Chambres D'Art with Bruno and Marion. Bruno is an absolute joy to talk to, a great communicator who knows everything about the local area and Bordeaux. His recommendations for restaurants and activities are well worth following.
Breakfast is a joy with fruit, (his own special yoghurt and cream cheese), fresh orange juice, croissant, ham and cheese and baguette. We were happy to discuss our plans with Bruno and Marion over delicious coffee.
We could not have wanted more and are happy to recommend Les Chambres d'Art to other travellers.Nice B&B in Bordeaux with the nice host – Pimchanok from Switzerland – 18 April 2025 (10/10)
Mr. Bruno was an excellent host, as many have confirmed, as well as his wife. He was there to welcome us even though it was a bit early and offered many useful advice on how to get around town and what to do everyday. Breakfasts were always good. The room was big and the bed was good (we booked a Triple room). The house was nicely decorated and welcoming. The bathroom and toilet was a bit outdated and needed an upkeep but they were in working condition. The house has no lift so not convenient for people with disability or have huge luggages that need to be carried upstairs. The hotel location was close to the Capuchin market and other historical places and not too far from the train station so it's handy for people travelling from the airport with the Bus 1 or the Tram. But it's quite far from the old town quarters and the shopping streets so if you want to be close to those, you may have to prepare to walk up to 30 minutes or to use the Trams for transport daily (we used the trams everyday, very convenient). Overall, for us we would stay here again if we are in Bordeaux because now we know how to get around the city. Thanks Mr. Bruno very much for the nice stay of 4 nights in Bordeaux !
