Hotel Description
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked down Rue Buhan – it’s one of those narrow cobblestone streets in Bordeaux’s old quarter that honestly looks like it hasn’t changed much since the 18th century. But then you spot La loge des Salinières tucked between these historic buildings, and suddenly you realize you’ve stumbled onto something pretty special. The building itself has this gorgeous limestone facade that’s clearly been restored with serious care, and when you step inside… well, it’s like someone took the best parts of old Bordeaux charm and actually made them work for modern travelers.
The rooms are what really won me over, though. I mean, you’re staying in what used to be salt merchants’ quarters (that’s what “salinières” means, by the way – the salt trade was huge here back in the day), and they’ve kept these incredible original details like exposed beams and stone walls, but everything else is surprisingly contemporary. The beds are actually comfortable – not just pretty to look at – and the bathrooms manage to feel luxurious despite being carved out of these old spaces. What I loved most was how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re literally in the heart of the city center. Those thick old walls really do their job. The only thing that might catch you off guard is the elevator situation – it’s there, but it’s tiny and sort of vintage, so if you’re hauling massive suitcases, maybe pack light or embrace the charm of those original staircases.
But here’s the thing that makes this place work so well: the location is just ridiculously good without feeling touristy. You can walk to Place du Parlement in about three minutes (that’s where you’ll find some of the best wine bars, and trust me, you want to hit up Bar à Vin if you’re serious about Bordeaux wines), and the tram stop at Hôtel de Ville is close enough that getting around the city is effortless. I actually spent most mornings just wandering the nearby streets with coffee from that little café on Rue des Remparts – you’ll discover these amazing hidden courtyards and vintage shops that most visitors completely miss because they’re staying out in the modern districts. The staff clearly knows the neighborhood inside and out too; they pointed me toward this incredible little restaurant on Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges that I never would have found otherwise. Parking can be a bit tricky if you’re driving – there’s an underground garage about a five-minute walk away, but honestly, once you’re settled in here, you probably won’t need your car much. The whole experience feels like you’re staying in someone’s carefully restored family home rather than a hotel, which I suppose is exactly what they were going for.
