Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about La Belle Endormie? The name literally means “Sleeping Beauty,” and honestly, it’s kind of perfect – this place has that dreamy, slightly-too-good-to-be-true quality that makes you wonder if you’ll wake up back in some generic chain hotel. But nope, it’s real, and it’s tucked away on rue Laroche in a way that feels like stumbling onto a secret.

The location is actually brilliant if you know Bordeaux at all. You’re right in the heart of things without being on one of those tourist-trap streets where you can’t sleep because of drunk people wandering around at 2 AM. I mean, you can walk to Place de la Bourse in maybe ten minutes, but rue Laroche itself is this quiet little residential street where the biggest noise you’ll hear is someone wheeling their garbage bin out on Tuesday mornings. The building itself – well, it’s one of those classic Bordeaux stone facades that photographs beautifully, but what really got me was stepping inside. There’s this immediate sense of someone actually caring about the details, you know? The kind of place where the owner (and there definitely is a real owner, not some corporate management company) has thought about things like decent lighting for reading and coffee that doesn’t taste like it came from a packet.

What really sets this place apart though is how it manages to feel authentically French without trying too hard. The breakfast situation alone – I’m talking actual local pastries, not those sad croissants that have been sitting under heat lamps since dawn. And the rooms, honestly, they’ve nailed that sweet spot between character and comfort. You get the old-world charm with things like original hardwood floors and those tall French windows, but also a shower with actual water pressure and WiFi that doesn’t cut out every five minutes. The 9.5 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s the kind of place where small touches add up. Like, there’s always someone around if you need something, but they’re not hovering or making you feel like you’re imposing when you ask about restaurant recommendations. Speaking of which, they actually know the neighborhood – not just the obvious places but spots like that little wine bar on rue du Pas-Saint-Georges that you’d never find on your own. Parking can be a bit tricky (it’s Bordeaux, so what do you expect?), but they’ll point you toward the closest public spots, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you probably won’t want to drive much anyway. The tram stop is close enough that getting around the city is easy, and for wine country day trips, there are better options than dealing with city parking anyway. If I had to pick one thing that might not work for everyone, it’s that this definitely skews toward the intimate side – if you’re looking for hotel amenities like a gym or room service, you’re in the wrong place. But if you want to feel like you’re staying in Bordeaux rather than just visiting it, La Belle Endormie gets it exactly right.

Many travelers prefer to book apartments in Bordeaux through local agencies that offer personalized recommendations and insider knowledge about the best neighborhoods for exploring the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Anyone who wants to open a bed and breakfast, anywhere in the world, should take a training course with Antony, the owner of La Belle Endormie B&B French Guest house. I frequent many hotels during the year but rarely have I found such meticulous attention and such great love for one's work. Antony's kindness and availability are extraordinary, even the breakfast he serves you every morning in your room is truly delicious. Thank you for everything Antony and I hope that one day we can meet again.

What could be improved: I liked everything.
