Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel des 4 Soeurs? The name translates to “Four Sisters,” and honestly, it actually feels like staying at a place run by family – though in the best possible way, not the awkward way where someone’s aunt keeps asking about your love life. I stumbled onto this place during my third trip to Bordeaux, and it’s become my go-to spot when I want to be right in the thick of things without paying those insane prices you get closer to Place de la Bourse.
The location on Cours du 30 Juillet is pretty much perfect if you ask me. You’re literally a five-minute walk from all the main pedestrian shopping streets, and I mean actually five minutes, not that “five minutes” hotels always claim that turns out to be fifteen. The Grand Théâtre is right there, which is gorgeous at night when it’s all lit up, and you can easily walk to those wine bars along Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges that the locals actually frequent. What I really appreciate is that you’re close enough to hear the city buzz during the day, but the street itself isn’t one of those nightmare spots where delivery trucks start rumbling at 6 AM.
Look, it’s a solid three-star place – not fancy, but they know what they’re doing. The rooms are clean and comfortable, though don’t expect a ton of space if you’re the type who spreads out all your stuff everywhere. The beds are actually decent (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathrooms have proper water pressure, which you’d be surprised how often that’s not a given in older European hotels. The staff genuinely seems to care about helping you figure out the city, and they’ll give you real recommendations, not just send you to the tourist traps. I remember the front desk guy telling me about this little wine shop around the corner that ended up being one of my favorite discoveries.
The 7.2 rating seems about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers on what it promises. Breakfast is simple but fresh, with actual local pastries instead of those sad continental buffet situations. You’ll probably want to grab coffee elsewhere though (there’s a great spot called Plume Small Kitchen just down the street that does proper espresso). The whole place has this lived-in charm that I find way more appealing than those sterile chain hotels. Sure, the elevator is tiny and the WiFi can be a bit temperamental on the upper floors, but these feel like minor trade-offs when you’re getting such a central location at a reasonable price.
If you’re planning to explore Bordeaux on foot – which you absolutely should – this place makes a perfect base. You can walk to the river, hit the wine museum, wander through the Saint-Pierre district, and still make it back for an afternoon rest without feeling like you’ve hiked across the city. Plus, being right in the center means you can easily duck back to drop off shopping bags or grab a jacket if the weather changes, which it does pretty frequently here.
