Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about FirstName Bordeaux? It’s actually tucked away on this quiet little street – Claude Bonnier – that most tourists probably walk right past without noticing. I mean, you’re literally a three-minute walk from Place Gambetta (where all the action is), but the hotel sits on this surprisingly peaceful side street that feels almost residential. The building itself has that classic Bordeaux limestone facade that blends right into the neighborhood, which I honestly loved – none of that flashy “look at me, I’m a hotel” vibe you get with some places.
Inside, they’ve done something really smart with the design. It’s got this modern boutique feel without being too precious about it, if that makes sense. The lobby has these gorgeous high ceilings – you can tell this used to be something grand back in the day – but they’ve furnished it with contemporary pieces that actually feel comfortable to sit in. I spent a good chunk of one evening just hanging out there with a glass of wine from their bar, watching locals walk by through the big windows. The staff, by the way, were genuinely helpful without being overly formal – they knew the neighborhood inside and out and gave me some excellent restaurant recommendations that weren’t just the obvious tourist spots. One guy at the front desk told me about this tiny wine bar on Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges that I never would’ve found otherwise.
The rooms are well thought out too, especially for a city center location. Mine faced the interior courtyard, so it was actually quiet at night (something you definitely can’t take for granted in Bordeaux’s center). The bed was proper comfortable, and honestly, the bathroom was bigger than I expected – good water pressure in the shower, which always matters more than you think it will. What I really appreciated were the little touches that showed someone was paying attention: decent lighting for reading, enough outlets near the bed, and a coffee machine that didn’t require an engineering degree to operate. Is it luxury? No, not really – but it’s smart and comfortable in a way that feels genuine rather than trying too hard. The whole place just works, you know? It’s the kind of hotel where you can easily picture yourself coming back, especially if you want to be right in the heart of things without the chaos of staying directly on the main tourist drags.
