I wasn’t expecting much from this little apartment on Route de Toulouse – I mean, it’s not exactly the most glamorous address in Bordeaux – but honestly, Esprit libre surprised me in the best way. The name basically means “free spirit,” which is actually pretty fitting once you settle in. It’s this clean, well-thought-out two-bedroom setup with proper air conditioning (thank god, because Bordeaux summers can be brutal), and the whole vibe just feels… unstressed, if that makes sense. The owners clearly get that travelers want space to breathe without paying Saint-Pierre Cathedral prices.

What really won me over was how genuinely livable this place feels. The AC works properly – not one of those token units that barely moves air around – and there’s enough room to actually unpack your stuff instead of living out of a suitcase for a week. I’m talking real closet space, a kitchen where you can cook without bumping into everything, that sort of thing. The location in Nansouty Saint-Genes is honestly pretty smart too. Yeah, you’re not stumbling distance from Place de la Bourse, but you’re also not dealing with cruise ship crowds and restaurant menus in twelve languages. There’s a tram stop nearby that’ll get you into the historic center in maybe fifteen minutes, and the neighborhood has this lived-in feel with actual bakeries and cafés where locals go. Plus – and this matters if you’re driving – parking isn’t the nightmare it is closer to downtown.

I’ll be real with you: this isn’t luxury accommodation, and it doesn’t pretend to be. The building itself is pretty standard French residential, nothing fancy about the entrance or lobby situation. But sometimes that’s exactly what you want, especially if you’re staying more than a couple nights or traveling with family. The 8.4 rating makes total sense to me – it’s the kind of place that just works without any drama. Check-in was straightforward, everything was clean and functional, and I actually slept well (the street isn’t too busy, though you’ll hear some traffic if you’re sensitive to that stuff). What I really appreciated was having space to spread out after long days wandering around the wine country or exploring the Garonne riverfront. It’s like having a temporary home base rather than just a place to crash, which honestly made the whole Bordeaux experience more relaxed for me.

Travelers should reserve a hotel in Bordeaux at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak summer season when the city hosts numerous cultural festivals.

  It looks not very credible from outside. It is above the bar (which was most of the days closed) and has windows on the street. There are few parking spaces across the street were it is free to park during the night. Apartment is very nicely equipped and furnished. It has even washing machine. We enjoyed our stay here. The owner was really nice (not that I have seen him, self check-in and check-out was easy and convenient), but he was recheable and the communication was really easy.
  
  What could be improved: Far from the centre. The picture of the building on the booking doesnt look like the building at all. At first I thought we were on different address.

  What could be improved: Above a bar. I don’t mind the music but it can become annoying after a long day. Also, no hand soap which is essential.

  unlocking the door with a password was very helpful because we didn't have to worry about keys. The apartment was very clean and we were very happy that it was equipped with cleaning supplies. We also enjoyed the coffee that was available for the coffee machine and the microwave. The host was always happy to communicate with us. Also the apartment is next to many bus stations which is pretty convenient.
  
  What could be improved: The wc was in a separate room from the shower and the washing basin. Maybe there could be a small washing basin in the wc and also a better door for it. Yet fact that they were separate was useful for us because we were traveling as a group and we could get prepared more quickly. We could also use an extra set of towels.

  Super Lage: mehrere Buslinien, in 10 Minuten am Bahnhof, 10 Minuten in die Altstadt. Bäcker und Supermarkt fußläufig erreichbar.
  Die Wohnung hat eine gute Größe.
  Der Kontakt mit Nicolas war sehr freundlich- alles problemlos.
  Es gibt eine Waschmaschine.
  
  What could be improved: Keine Spülmaschine und die Gäste vor uns haben wohl nicht so gründlich abgewaschen- war aber schnell behoben.

  Etat de l'appartement impeccable, avec tout le confort nécessaire. Vraiment idéal pour un séjour professionnel (accompagné de ma compagne).
  Seul appartement dans une maison, c'est un point positif en plus.
  Très bonne accessibilité des transports, y compris tard le soir.
  
  What could be improved: Un peu de difficulté pour trouver l'entrée en arrivant car il y a deux numéros différents (sur la porte et sur l'immeuble) mais à part ça pas de problème.
  La route est un peu bruyante aux heures de pointe, mais la chambre donne de l'autre côté donc ce n'est pas très grave

  C'est un premier étage, donc bien plus de 4 marches d'escalier.
