Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “CHAMBRES chez l’habitant” in the booking confirmation, I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d gotten myself into. The name literally means “rooms at a local’s place,” which sounds either charmingly authentic or potentially sketchy, depending on your travel comfort zone. But honestly? This little gem on Rue de Rigoulet turned out to be one of those happy accidents that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special.
The Saint Augustin neighborhood isn’t where most tourists end up – it’s actually where real Bordelais live, which means you’re walking past the same boulangerie every morning where locals grab their daily bread, not some tourist trap charging €8 for a croissant. The street itself is quiet (I mean, properly quiet – no tram noise like you get closer to the center), lined with those classic Bordeaux limestone buildings that look golden when the afternoon sun hits them just right. You’re maybe a 15-minute walk from Place Gambetta, or honestly, just hop on the bus – there’s a stop practically at the corner. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s tried to park in central Bordeaux will tell you is basically a miracle.
What really struck me about this place is how it manages to feel like staying with a well-traveled aunt who actually knows how to host people. The rooms have that lived-in comfort – not hotel-sterile, but thoughtfully arranged with little touches that show someone cares. I’m talking about proper reading lights (you know how rare that is?), decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every ten minutes, and – this might sound small but it matters – really good coffee in the morning. The whole setup feels intimate without being intrusive; you get your privacy but there’s always someone around if you need local recommendations or help figuring out the bus system.
The 9.1 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there. It’s not trying to be a fancy hotel – the bathroom’s compact and you might hear your neighbor’s shower running – but everything works, everything’s clean, and there’s this genuine warmth that you just can’t fake. Plus, and I cannot stress this enough, the value is incredible for Bordeaux. You’re paying chambres d’hôtes prices to stay in a neighborhood where you can actually imagine living, not just visiting. The morning routine became my favorite part: walking five minutes to get fresh pastries, then sitting in the little courtyard area with coffee, planning the day without feeling rushed to check out or fight crowds. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay in Bordeaux longer than you planned – which, honestly, happened to me. Sometimes the best travel experiences come from places that feel less like accommodations and more like temporary homes.

The breakfast was delicious. The host were really friendly and answered any questions we had. The room was cozy, the bathroom was nice too. The room had a very pleasant smell to it too. The huge window and the bathroom skylight let in a ton of light. It was close to the tram too.

Lovely tastefully decorated room with a beautiful big bathroom. Very kind host. Nice to eat breakfast in the garden. Very quiet despite being in the centre of Bordeaux and perfectly situated for us.
