Hotel Description

Honestly, when I first walked up to this little place on Rue Barreyre, I almost missed it entirely – which is actually part of its charm. The “chambre de charme aux chartrons” doesn’t scream for attention like some of the flashier hotels closer to the old town, but that’s exactly why it works so well. You’re right in the heart of Chartrons, which I mean, if you know Bordeaux at all, you know this is where you want to be. It’s got that perfect mix of local life and easy access to everything without feeling touristy.

The room itself lives up to that “charme” promise, though not in an over-the-top way. There’s something refreshingly honest about the space – it feels like someone actually thought about how you’d live there for a few days rather than just trying to photograph well for Instagram. The bed’s comfortable (I’m picky about this stuff), and you know what really got me? The attention to little details that matter when you’re actually staying somewhere. Good lighting for reading, enough outlets where you need them, that sort of thing. The bathroom’s compact but well-designed, and the water pressure’s solid – always a gamble with older buildings in this part of town, but they got it right here. I will say the walls aren’t super thick, so if you’re a light sleeper, maybe pack earplugs, though honestly the neighborhood’s pretty quiet once evening settles in.

What really makes this place special is the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way everyone says. You’re literally a two-minute walk from some of the best wine bars in the city (try L’Alchimiste if you’re into natural wines), and the Saturday morning market on Cours de Verdun is right there. Plus, you can actually walk to the river without it being a whole production, which is nice when you want to clear your head after a long day of wine tasting. The tram’s close enough to be useful but far enough that you’re not dealing with the noise. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle around here – street spots fill up quick, but there’s a public lot about five minutes away that’s reasonable. The host was genuinely helpful with local tips, not just the obvious tourist stuff but actual neighborhood insights. At that 8.9 rating, you’re getting solid value for what you pay, especially considering you’re staying in one of Bordeaux’s most authentic districts rather than some generic hotel zone. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re experiencing the city rather than just visiting it.

Reviews

  • Comfortable stay in the best neighbourhood of Bordeaux – Esmee from Netherlands – 5 March 2025 (9/10)

Really nice location, in a quiet street, safe but within a few minutes you are at the river area and nice cafes.

What could be improved: The bed is quite hard, for me it was okay but if you don’t like it you have to take this into account.

  • Peaceful and relaxing stay in cute room – very French – Sophie from United Kingdom – 7 October 2024 (10/10)

Really cute little room in a quiet street near the main road which runs along the river. Very near a tram stop but I just walked everywhere as it was right in the middle between the Bassins à Flot and the city centre. Hosts very friendly and helpful.
A Nespresso machine and a kettle in the room too which was a nice touch.
    Excellent shower.
Peaceful and relaxing place to stay.

What could be improved: Nothing which would put me off staying again and recommending but a few things others might like to know:
Be aware the mattress is very hard. This wasn’t an issue for me but others might find it uncomfortable.
No milk for coffee (not an issue – I bought some!) but sugar provided.
Only one towel (hardly a deal breaker!)
Fairly narrow spiral staircase in building (no lift) so be aware of this if you have large or heavy cases. Property is on first floor.
The property is in an old building and there are other people living on other floors so you can hear people moving about etc but it’s not noisy.
