Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw Au Bord’eaux de Malou’s address on Rue Henri Dunant, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The Bastide neighborhood isn’t exactly where most tourists end up, which actually turned out to be one of its biggest charms. You’re on the 7th floor here (there’s an elevator, thank god), and the views across the Garonne toward the historic center are genuinely lovely, especially in the evening when the stone buildings catch that golden light. I mean, you’re not staying in the postcard-perfect old town, but you’re looking right at it – and honestly, that might be better.
The thing about this place is that it feels more like staying in someone’s well-appointed apartment than a typical hotel. The rooms have that lived-in comfort without being shabby, and there’s something refreshing about being away from the tourist crowds that pack the streets around Place de la Bourse. From here, you can walk down to the river in about ten minutes, catch the tram into the city center without dealing with the narrow medieval streets and impossible parking, or – and this is what I loved – explore the actual Bordeaux that locals know. There’s this fantastic little boulangerie just two blocks over that does proper canelés (not the tourist versions), and the Saturday market at Marché des Capucins is close enough that you’ll hear the early morning setup if you’re a light sleeper.
What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually care about the place. Check-in was smooth, they had real recommendations (not just the obvious wine tours), and when I mentioned I was interested in natural wines, they pointed me toward this tiny cave à vin in Sainte-Croix that I never would have found otherwise. The 8.2 rating makes sense – it’s not luxury, but it’s thoughtful in ways that matter. The Wi-Fi actually works, the shower has proper pressure, and there’s decent soundproofing considering you’re in the middle of a city. My only real complaint? The air conditioning struggled a bit during the July heat wave, but honestly, most places in Bordeaux aren’t really built for those 35°C days. You know what though – opening the windows at night brought in this amazing cross-breeze from the river, along with the distant sounds of the city winding down. Sometimes the imperfect solutions end up being the most memorable.
Apartments in Bordeaux provide travelers with an authentic local experience, allowing them to shop at neighborhood markets and cook with fresh ingredients from the renowned Aquitaine region.
