Hotel Description
You know what’s funny about ATYPIQUE Grand théâtre? The name pretty much tells you everything – it really is atypical, and yes, you’re literally around the corner from Bordeaux’s gorgeous Grand Théâtre. I stumbled across this place last spring when my usual spot was booked, and honestly, I’m kind of glad it worked out that way. The building itself has this quirky character that feels very Bordeaux – not trying too hard to be boutique-y, but definitely not your standard chain hotel either. It’s tucked on Rue Parlement Sainte-Catherine, which (if you know the area) puts you right in the sweet spot of the old town without being on one of those crazy tourist streets where you can’t sleep past 7 AM.
The rooms have this sort of theatrical vibe – I mean, it’d be weird if they didn’t, given the location – but they pull it off without being gimmicky. Think rich fabrics and dramatic lighting that actually works instead of making you feel like you’re living in a stage set. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night, which is no small feat when you’re this close to Place de la Comédie. The walls are solid, and the windows do their job. Parking’s always a nightmare in this part of Bordeaux (fair warning), but there’s a decent public garage about three minutes’ walk away on Cours de l’Intendance, and the front desk actually gives you useful directions instead of just vaguely pointing down the street. The staff, by the way, seem to genuinely know the neighborhood – they steered me toward this little wine bar on Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges that I never would’ve found otherwise, and away from the tourist trap places on Cours de l’Intendance.
Here’s the thing that really sold me on this place: it feels like it belongs in Bordeaux. Not like some international hotel that could be anywhere, but somewhere that makes sense on this particular street, in this particular city. The breakfast room looks out toward the theatre district, and you can actually see locals heading to work instead of just other tourists. It’s a proper 4-star setup – good beds, rainfall showers, all that – but with enough personality that you remember where you stayed. The 9.2 rating makes sense when you’re there; it’s not perfect (the elevator’s a bit temperamental, and don’t expect a huge lobby), but it gets the important stuff right. Plus, you’re maybe eight minutes from the river, ten from the cathedral, and close enough to the Chartrons district that you can easily wander up there for dinner. If you’re the type who likes to actually explore a city on foot rather than just hop between landmarks, this spot gives you a real base to work from.
