Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about this place? Walking up to 36 Rue Borie, you’re right in the heart of Chartrons – and I mean the real Chartrons, not some touristy bubble. This is where Bordeaux locals actually hang out, with wine bars tucked between vintage shops and that morning market energy that makes you want to grab a coffee and just wander around.
The apartment itself sits on the first floor (which is actually the second floor if you’re American – took me a minute to figure that out). Honestly, it’s got that lived-in charm that three-star places sometimes nail better than fancier hotels. The space feels like someone’s actual home, not a sterile hotel room, which I appreciated after a long day exploring the city. The windows face onto Rue Borie, so you’ll hear some street life – not obnoxious, just the gentle hum of a neighborhood that’s actually alive. I found it oddly comforting, especially in the evening when people are heading home from work or meeting friends for aperitifs.
What really sold me on the location was discovering just how walkable everything is from here. The antique market on Cours de Verdun is literally a five-minute stroll – perfect for Sunday morning browsing with a croissant in hand. And here’s something the guidebooks don’t tell you: the wine shops along Rue Notre Dame are where locals actually buy their bottles, not the touristy places near the cathedral. You can walk there in about three minutes and have conversations with shopkeepers who genuinely care about what you’re looking for. The tram stop at Chartrons is close enough that you don’t need to think about it, but far enough that you’re not dealing with constant tram noise.
I’ll be honest – at a 7.7 rating, this isn’t going to be perfect for everyone. The building has character, which means things like slightly creaky floors and that particular French apartment smell (not bad, just… distinctly French). But if you’re the type of traveler who wants to feel like you’re actually living in Bordeaux for a few days rather than just visiting, this hits the sweet spot. The check-in was straightforward, though you’ll want to coordinate timing since it’s not a traditional hotel setup. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – street spots are possible but not guaranteed, so factor that in if you’re driving.
The neighborhood really comes alive in the early evening, when the wine bars start filling up and you can smell dinner cooking from various apartments. It’s that golden hour when Bordeaux feels most itself, and you’re perfectly positioned to be part of it rather than observing from some sterile hotel district. For the price point and the authentic neighborhood experience, it’s a solid choice if you want to skip the generic hotel experience and actually live like a local for a while.
To book a hotel in Bordeaux during the wine harvest season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the city attracts wine enthusiasts from around the world.
