Honestly, when I first walked up to 36 Rue Borie, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the entrance is pretty unassuming, tucked right into the street life of Chartrons. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. This second-floor apartment feels like you’re staying in someone’s actual home rather than some sterile hotel room, and the courtyard location means you’re not dealing with the street noise that can be pretty intense in this part of Bordeaux.

The air conditioning was a godsend when I visited in July – I mean, these old Bordeaux buildings can get stuffy, and having proper climate control made all the difference. The apartment itself has that lived-in feel that somehow manages to be both comfortable and authentic. From the windows, you’re looking out onto a quiet inner courtyard instead of the bustling rue, which was perfect for actually getting some sleep. The Chartrons neighborhood is honestly one of my favorite parts of Bordeaux – you’re walking distance to the antique shops along rue Notre-Dame (which get crazy busy on weekends, fair warning), and the Saturday morning market at Marché des Chartrons is just a few minutes away. I found myself grabbing coffee at the little café on the corner most mornings before heading out.

What really struck me was how this place sits right in the sweet spot between tourist convenience and local authenticity. You’re close enough to walk to the wine museum and all that waterfront stuff along the Garonne, but you’re also in a neighborhood where actual Bordelais live and work. The tram stop at Chartrons is practically around the corner, so getting to the city center or even out to the wine regions is straightforward. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this area – street spots fill up fast, especially during wine season – but there’s usually something within a block or two if you’re patient. The 8.5 rating makes sense to me; it’s not luxury, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. The check-in was smooth, the space was clean and functional, and honestly, after spending days wandering around Bordeaux’s wine bars and markets, coming back to this quiet courtyard apartment felt like a perfect retreat.
