You know what caught me off guard about this place? Walking up to 36 Rue Borie, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from the street view – it’s just this typical Chartrons building front. But once you climb up to the first floor apartment, everything changes. The courtyard-facing windows mean you’re completely insulated from any street noise, which is actually huge since Rue Borie can get pretty lively, especially when people are heading to and from the quays.

The Chartrons neighborhood is sort of having this moment right now – it’s where Bordeaux locals go when they want to avoid the tourist crowds around Place de la Bourse, but still be walking distance from everything that matters. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute stroll from Cours Xavier Arnozan where all the antique dealers set up, and maybe ten minutes to reach the wine bars along Quai des Chartrons. What I really loved was being able to grab groceries at the little market on Cours de Verdun in the morning, then actually have space to spread out and eat like a human being – not cramped in some tiny hotel room. The apartment setup means you’ve got proper counter space, a real fridge, and honestly, after a day of walking around tasting wine, sometimes you just want to come back and make yourself a simple dinner.

The whole area feels authentically Bordeaux in a way that’s getting harder to find. Sure, it’s been gentrified – I’m not pretending otherwise – but it hasn’t been Disney-fied yet. You’ll still hear neighbors chatting in the courtyard, smell someone cooking something amazing drifting up from downstairs, and the morning light through those courtyard windows is just… well, it’s the kind of thing that makes you want to linger over coffee instead of rushing out to check boxes off a tourist list. That 9.7 rating makes complete sense once you’re there – it’s one of those places where every small detail just works, from the check-in process (super smooth) to having enough outlets near the bed for your phone charger. The only thing I’d mention is that it’s a first-floor walk-up, so if you’re traveling with heavy luggage, just factor that in. But honestly, for the price point and the location, I’d absolutely book it again.
