Hotel Description

You know what really caught me off guard about this place? The name makes it sound way fancier than it actually is – and I mean that in the best possible way. Appartement aux Portes du Jardin Public is basically this perfectly decent apartment rental that sits right where you’d want to be in Bordeaux, just off Rue le Chapelier. I’ll be honest, when I first walked up to the building, it looked pretty standard for this part of town – that classic French apartment block style you see everywhere in the 33000 district. But here’s the thing about the location that nobody really tells you: you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Jardin Public (hence the name, obviously), which is absolutely clutch if you’re traveling with kids or just need somewhere green to decompress after wandering around the city all day.

The apartment itself is solid 3-star territory – nothing that’ll blow your mind, but everything works and it’s clean, which honestly is half the battle when you’re booking these independent places. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re pretty central. The street isn’t one of those main thoroughfares that has delivery trucks rumbling past at 6 AM, if you know what I mean. The space feels authentically Bordeaux too – high ceilings, those tall windows that actually open (revolutionary concept, I know), and you get glimpses of real neighborhood life from the windows. I spent way too much time people-watching from there, actually. The kitchen setup is practical enough if you want to grab stuff from the morning market and make your own coffee – and trust me, you’ll want to hit up the vendors near Place des Grands Hommes, which is maybe a 10-minute walk.

Look, the 7.7 rating feels about right for what this is. It’s not going to be anyone’s dream vacation story, but it absolutely gets the job done if you want to stay somewhere that feels more like living in Bordeaux than just visiting it. The check-in was straightforward (though I’d definitely coordinate your arrival time in advance), and the whole setup works especially well if you’re planning to actually explore the city rather than hang out in your room all day. I mean, you’re walking distance from the tram lines, the historic center is totally doable on foot, and when you need a break from all the wine bars and cobblestones, that park is right there. Plus – and this might sound weird – but the building has this particular smell in the hallways that’s just so distinctly French apartment building. Not bad, just… authentic, you know? It’s those little details that made me feel like I was actually staying somewhere with character rather than some generic rental.

Reviews

  • Great for a city break – Graham from United Kingdom – 2 May 2024 (9/10)

Close to the tram stop. Nice little neighbourhood restaurants and cafes close by. Supermarket close by.

What could be improved: Could have been warmer. Couldn't understand how some of the radiators worked.

  • Superb – Andrew from Singapore – 16 August 2023 (9/10)

The apartment and rooms are spacious

What could be improved: The dishwasher does not work properly, and so the dishes are not well cleaned. The washing machine also could not spin dry the laundry well.

  • Really enjoyed it! – Melissa from Australia – 14 August 2023 (9/10)

The location was fantastic and it was very spacious for 4 people.

What could be improved: The door handles to the bathroom and bedrooms fell off. The third step to the verandah fell off also.

  • Very good – Rory from Ireland – 20 September 2022 (8/10)

    Location

  • Beautiful apartment in a great location – would definitely stay again! – Ciara from United Kingdom – 20 September 2022 (9/10)

The apartment was beautiful, a great size for 5 people with 3 great bedrooms, a lovely living space and balcony (as well as multiple bathrooms). Our host was wonderful and extremely accommodating which made our stay even more special. We would absolutely stay again, wonderful location and great value. Our host made sure we had 3 great fans which meant it didn't matter as much that there was no aircon (we visited in Sept). Its close to the tram, and parking stations for Lime and Dott bikes too (lime right outside) which is very handy in Bordeaux, and situated right next to the Jardin Publique, which is beautiful. Overall our experience was really positive and would advise people not to hesitate in booking this place. Thanks!

What could be improved: As mentioned in other reviews, two of the bedrooms are at street level so quite noisy but bringing some simple ear plugs as well as the fans meant the noise was fine.

  • Superb – Tom from Ireland – 9 July 2024 (9/10)

Plenty of rooms to accommodate smaller kids & location was ideal: close to the city centre & directly beside a beautiful park.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Brilliant Bordeaux justifiably a UNESCO World heritage city and we had a pleasant stay with a few gripes – Tracey from United Kingdom – 11 August 2023 (7/10)

    Location close to park
Able to walk to many attractions/restaurants etc
    Small covered outside space
    2 bathrooms and separate toilet
    Good broadband

What could be improved: Road noise affecting 2 lower bedrooms
    Cleaning could have been better
Several minor faults which need correcting eg loose floor tile in kitchen, most door handles were loose ,missing shelf inside fridge door ,toilet cisterns leak ,
On arrival lots of black bin bags containing rubbish in basement of entrance. We managed to put out and get collected these 12 bags of rubbish.
In theory there are 2 rubbish collections per week and 1 for recycling .However waste must be placed at kerbside the night before.it was unclear whose rubbish this was but we ended up sorting ourselves due to the smell.

  • We had a Very pleasant stay!! – Sophie from Netherlands – 14 July 2024 (10/10)

The flat is modern, very spacious and it was very clean. We were 4 adults and 2 teenagers but we had a lot of space. The flat is very well equipped.
If you have a car you can park right in front of the flat. It will cost you around 1.80 euro per hour. ( max 4 hours) . It is free from 7:00pm to 9:00am.

What could be improved: We liked every thing but a pity we had only one set of keys…

  • Pleasant – Elaine from Ireland – 31 May 2025 (6/10)

    Location and overall facilities

What could be improved: There were no covers for duvets . Stairs on them

  • Disappointing – Wendy from Canada – 30 April 2025 (4/10)

    The location was perfect.

What could be improved: The bathrooms are in need of update and more detailed cleaning. The washing machine was not working properly. Finally the place could use some updated bedding and linens
